Chin Surgery
Ohio cosmetic surgeon Dr. Faisal Quereshy recommends chin surgery, or mentoplasty, to patients with the following cosmetic concerns:
- Weak or under-projected chin
- Chin and other features lack harmony
- Poor lower face contours
Chin Surgery Preparation
Dr. Quereshy will help you prepare for chin surgery and provide you with aftercare instructions and necessary prescriptions well in advance so you feel relaxed and ready for your procedure. If you smoke or use other tobacco products, you will be required to quit using them at least six weeks before chin surgery.
Two weeks before and after surgery, you will be directed to discontinue taking medications and supplements that can thin the blood, such as ibuprofen, aspirin and vitamin E.
Abstain from alcohol for one week prior to chin surgery, and do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery. Let Dr. Quereshy know if you notice any signs of infection or illness prior to chin surgery, as it is imperative you be in good health before undergoing cosmetic surgery of any kind.
Dress comfortably the day of surgery, and do not wear makeup, nail polish, jewelry, other metal items or contact lenses. Bring glasses to help you read necessary paperwork.
Chin Implant Surgery
General or sedation anesthesia will be used to help you rest comfortably during chin surgery. Small, inconspicuous incisions are made on the inside of your mouth or underneath your chin.
In order to increase the projection and improve the definition of your chin, a pocket will be created in front of your chin bone, and a synthetic chin implant will be inserted to permanently augment your chin. Typically, the chin pocket will keep the chin implant in place, however sometimes screws or permanent sutures are needed to prevent the chin implant from shifting.
Alternatively, chin augmentation may be accomplished by surgically advancing your jawbone instead of using a chin implant.
Dissolvable or removable sutures are used to close incisions, and a tight chin strap dressing will be placed on your chin to reduce swelling. The procedure typically takes 1-2 hours to perform, however if you choose to combine chin surgery with neck liposuction or other cosmetic surgery procedures, the operative time will increase.
Chin Surgery Recovery
Keep your chin dressing dry and intact until you shower before your first follow-up appointment, which will be scheduled 3-4 days after your chin surgery procedure. Sutures will be replaced with surgical tape at your first follow-up appointment, and this must also be kept dry and intact for the remainder of your first week of chin surgery recovery.
Take pain medications and antibiotics as directed, keep your head elevated, and use cold compresses to minimize swelling in the days following chin surgery. Avoid strenuous activity, including lifting and bending, for at least 4-6 weeks.
Most patients can return to work within 1-2 weeks of chin surgery, and Dr. Quereshy will let you know when normal activity and strenuous activity may be resumed depending on your healing progress.
Bruising, swelling and discomfort should be minimal by week two of the chin surgery recovery period, and you will begin to enjoy your final results and improved chin contours within 3-6 months.
