Dysport
Ohio cosmetic surgeon Dr. Faisal Quereshy recommends Dysport injections to patients with the following cosmetic concerns:
- Dynamic forehead wrinkles
- Glabellar lines or 11's
- Crow's feet
- Mild eyebrow sagging
Preparing for Dysport Treatment
Dr. Quereshy will have you start preparing for your Dysport treatment and provide you with aftercare instructions well in advance to ensure you achieve the best possible results. If you smoke or use other tobacco products, you will be required to quit using them at least six weeks before the procedure.
Two weeks before your Dysport injections, you will be directed to discontinue taking medications and supplements that can thin the blood, such as ibuprofen, aspirin and vitamin E. Additionally, you will be instructed to abstain from alcohol for one week prior to receiving Dysport injections.
Dysport Injections
Immediately prior to your Dysport treatment, your face will be cleansed, and Dr. Quereshy will use alcohol swabs to sterilize the treatment area. After marking the injection sites, he will carefully place the Dysport product in the areas of your upper face that will smooth away your wrinkles, as well as slightly lift your eyebrows, if desired.
Dysport injections are usually only mildly uncomfortable for patients, but if requested, Dr. Quereshy will numb the treatment area with ice or topical anesthetic. Treatment with Dysport injections is usually very quick and takes less than 30 minutes, however it may take slightly longer if you decide to combine Dysport with other injectable treatments such as Juvederm, Restylane or Radiesse.
Dysport is measured in smaller units than Botox, and the typical treatment involves anywhere from 45-250 units depending on the amount of correction you desire.
Dysport vs. Botox
Dysport and Botox are both injectable wrinkle relaxers derived from botulinum type A, a neurotoxin designed to block nerve impulses that stimulate muscle movement. There is debate in the medical community over some slight differences between the two products, however most physicians agree that both Dysport and Botox provide comparable wrinkle correction.
Dr. Quereshy will recommend either Dysport or Botox to you based on the type of treatment you desire, your unique anatomy and whether you've previously experienced better correction with one wrinkle treatment over the other.
Dysport Side Effects
As with all cosmetic procedures, some side effects can occur with Dysport. Potential Dysport side effects include mild redness, bruising and swelling at injection sites, however these are temporary and usually resolve within 1-2 weeks.
Apply ice to reduce swelling, and keep injection sites clean until they are healed to avoid redness and irritation. Additionally, avoid rubbing or touching the treated area for at least 48 hours after treatment to avoid product movement or migration.
On rare occasion, Dysport injections may cause unwanted muscle relaxation and facial drooping or asymmetry. These side effects are typically the result of poor injection technique and can be easily avoided by seeking Dysport treatment with an experienced injector.
Dysport Recovery and Results
No downtime or recovery period is necessary after Dysport injections, and patients may return to work and normal activity immediately. Strenuous activity such as exercise and bending at the waist should be avoided for 24 hours after treatment to help prevent migration of the product to other areas.
You will see your final results about 2-4 days after your Dysport injections, and results typically last for 3-4 months. When your results start to fade, repeat treatments will be needed to continue providing dynamic wrinkle reduction of forehead creases, frown lines and crow's feet.
