Earlobe Repair

Ohio cosmetic surgeon Dr. Faisal Quereshy recommends earlobe repair surgery to patients with the following cosmetic concerns:

  • Ripped or torn earlobes
  • Gauged or stretched earlobes

Torn Earlobe Repair

The torn earlobe repair procedure is minimally invasive and typically performed under local anesthesia. After sterilizing the surgical site and stabilizing one or both earlobes, Dr. Quereshy will make an incision near the split or hole in the earlobe to remove excess skin and cartilage. The two sides of the earlobe are then sewn together with sutures.

If an earlobe tear occurs from a small piercing hole, immediate reconstruction with earlobe repair surgery is an option. However, if piercing holes have stretched naturally or with plugs or gauges over time, torn earlobe repair surgery may be performed only after earlobes have healed.

Preparing for Earlobe Repair Surgery

Dr. Quereshy will help you start preparing for earlobe repair surgery and provide you with aftercare instructions and necessary prescriptions well in advance so you are ready to go on the day of your procedure. If you smoke or use other tobacco products, you will be required to quit using them before your earlobe repair procedure.

Two weeks before and after surgery, you may be directed to discontinue taking medications and supplements that can thin the blood, such as ibuprofen, aspirin and vitamin E. You will need to abstain from alcohol for one week before your earlobe repair surgery, and let Dr. Quereshy know if you notice any signs of infection or illness prior to your procedure, as it is imperative you be in good health before undergoing torn earlobe repair.

Earlobe Repair Recovery and Results

Ointment will be placed on incision areas immediately following surgery, and in some cases, a dressing may be applied that must be left in place for several days during the earlobe repair recovery period.

After earlobe repair surgery, patients may return to work immediately. Antibiotics may be taken as directed to prevent infection, and prescription pain medication will not be necessary, as there is minimal discomfort associated with earlobe repair.

Sutures are removed within 1-2 weeks of the procedure, and patients may resume wearing earrings within six months. Ears may be re-pierced about three months after earlobe repair, or as soon as scars are soft. Earlobe repair scars are inconspicuous and will not detract from the appearance of your ears after healing is complete 3-6 months after surgery.
