Facial Trauma

If you have experienced an accident, injury or other traumatic incident that has resulted in distortion or disfigurement of your physical facial appearance, Dr. Quereshy will use his significant maxillofacial surgery experience and skill to correct your facial trauma. Facial trauma surgery should be performed immediately after the traumatic incident, however most patients will require multiple, staged surgeries.

Dr. Quereshy will help you prepare for additional facial trauma treatment after the initial surgery, and provide you with all pre- and post-operative instructions well in advance so you feel relaxed and ready for your procedures when the day of surgery arrives. Ensure that you have filled your prescriptions for antibiotics and pain medication prior to coming in for surgery.

Cleveland oral & maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Faisal Quereshy offers corrective surgery facial trauma to patients who have the following injuries or concerns:

  • Nasal swelling and bleeding
  • Blurry or double vision
  • Breathing problems
  • Disfigured or deformed facial bones or other tissues
  • Broken bones
  • Lacerations
  • Persistent swelling
  • Significant bruising

Preparing for surgery after a facial trauma

If you smoke or use other tobacco products, you will be required to quit using them at least six weeks before your facial trauma procedure.

Two weeks before and after surgery, you will be directed to discontinue taking medications and supplements that can thin the blood, such as ibuprofen, aspirin, and vitamin E. Be sure to avoid chemically treating your hair with dye, bleach, perms and relaxers a week before and four weeks after the procedure if incisions in or near the hairline are going to be necessary.

Abstain from alcohol for one week before your facial trauma surgery, and do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before. Let Dr. Quereshy know if you notice any signs of infection or illness prior to your facial trauma treatment, as it is imperative you be in good health before undergoing surgery of any kind.

Dress comfortably the day of surgery, and do not wear makeup, leave-in hair products, jewelry, other metal items or contact lenses. Bring glasses to help you read the necessary paperwork.

Goals of facial trauma surgery

Dr. Quereshy may employ a number of surgical procedures and techniques designed to address your facial trauma. The goal of facial trauma surgery is to fix broken bones, close lacerations and stop bleeding, all while leaving minimal scarring.

Multiple procedures are typically used to achieve optimal facial reconstruction, and each of these procedures must be staged months apart. Thus, facial trauma treatment can take a year or more in total.

Facial trauma surgery recovery and results

The length of your recovery period and the specific aftercare you require following surgery will depend very much on the type of facial trauma you experienced and the techniques Dr. Quereshy used to correct the trauma.

In general, take all medications and antibiotics as directed to avoid discomfort and prevent infection. Keep your head elevated, and use cold compresses to reduce swelling. Follow post-operative instructions very carefully, and attend your regular follow-up appointments with Dr. Quereshy so he may monitor your healing progress.
