Laser Hair Removal
Ohio cosmetic surgeon Dr. Faisal Quereshy recommends laser hair removal to patients who wish to permanently reduce unwanted hair on the face and body and treat ingrown hair and folliculitis, or hair follicle inflammation. Laser hair removal is effective on nearly any body area, including the:
- Under arms
- Bikini area
Preparing for Laser Hair Removal
Dr. Quereshy will help you prepare for your laser hair removal treatment and provide you with aftercare instructions well in advance so you feel ready and relaxed the day of your procedure.
Very little preparation is needed prior to undergoing laser hair removal, however patients should shave or use depilatories the day before their procedure. Do not wax, pluck or have electrolysis performed on the treatment area for at least 2-4 weeks before laser hair removal.
Additionally, avoid sun exposure before treatment to reduce the chance of experiencing laser hair removal side effects.

The day of the procedure, a cooling gel may be applied to your skin to prepare it for treatment and reduce potential stinging and discomfort. During laser hair removal, the laser handpiece, along with a cooling device, will be passed over your skin to damage the hair follicles that lie beneath and prevent future hair growth.
It typically takes 4-6 laser hair removal treatments spaced 4-10 weeks apart to experience dramatic hair reduction, and touch-up treatments every 6-12 months after your initial treatment series will help you maintain your results.
Laser Hair Removal Risks
Laser hair removal is a very safe procedure when performed by a physician or trained laser technician. Some redness and irritation of the treatment area may occur, but this typically resolves within a few days. On rare occasion, blisters or burns occur with laser hair removal, however this is usually the result of improperly performed treatment.
Don't pick at skin if it peels slightly after treatment, and be sure to gently cleanses the treated area. Avoid using exfoliants that may irritate skin exposed to the laser, and continue to avoid sun exposure for one week after treatment.
For patients with dark or ethnic skin tones, laser hair removal may be less effective. Laser hair removal is also not effective for removing blonde, red or gray hair.
