What is Latisse? 

Latisse is a prescription eyelash enhancement product designed to help men and women grow darker, thicker, longer and lusher upper eyelashes.

Developed by Allergan, the active ingredient in the Latisse eyelash growth product is bimatoprost 0.03 percent, an ophthalmic drug originally used to treat glaucoma. After noting that patients who used Allergan's glaucoma treatment product Lumigan experienced eyelash growth as well, scientists developed Latisse, which was FDA-approved for eyelash enhancement in 2008.

Do I need a prescription to get Latisse?

Latisse is available by prescription and is intended for use only on the upper eyelashes, however some physicians have reported that when used off-label, Latisse may also help patients thicken sparse eyebrows.

Who can benefit from Latisse for eyelash enhancement?

Cleveland cosmetic surgeon Dr. Faisal Quereshy recommends Latisse to patients with the following cosmetic concerns:

• Sparse eyelashes
• Thin eyelashes
• Blonde or light eyelashes
• Short eyelashes

Before using Latisse, cleanse your face to remove makeup and take out your contact lenses. Apply the Latisse solution to the applicator brushes and brush the product along the base of your upper eyelashes at night, before bed. Blot away excess solution with a tissue.

What are the side effects of Latisse?

Although uncommon, some minor side effects can occur with Latisse, including itching, dryness, redness and irritation in and around the eyes. It is also possible to experience darkening of the upper eyelid skin. If you are concerned about side effects, be sure to ask for more information during your appointment.

Permanent darkening of the iris can also occur in patients with light-colored eyes, such as blue or hazel eyes, however this is a rare Latisse side effect.

When will I see results from using Latisse?

Patients typically experience dramatic growth, darkening and lengthening of the upper eyelashes within 3-4 months of using Latisse. Latisse results will last as long as you continue using the product as directed. If discontinued, your eyelashes will return to their normal growth cycle over a period of weeks to months.
