Orthognathic Surgery

Ohio cosmetic surgeon Dr. Faisal Quereshy recommends orthognathic surgery to patients with the following cosmetic concerns:

  • Micrognathia (When the lower jaw doesn't project far enough, causing an overbite)
  • Progrnathia (When the lower jaw projects too far, causing an under bite)

An examination, including x-rays will be performed by Dr. Quereshy prior to surgery to decide how the jaw can best be improved. Dr. Quereshy will have you start preparing for your surgery and provide you with aftercare instructions and necessary prescriptions well in advance so you are ready to go when the day arrives.

Preparing for Orthognathic Surgery

If you smoke or use other tobacco products, you will be required to quit using them before your procedure.

Two weeks before and after surgery, you will be directed to discontinue taking medications and supplements that can thin the blood, such as ibuprofen, aspirin and vitamin E. Abstain from alcohol for one week before your orthognathic surgery, and do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before.

Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic surgery may involve the movement of one or both jaws. The surgery will be performed under general anesthesia.

Your jawbones will be repositioned according to your specific needs. An incision will be made inside the mouth in order to reposition your jawbones, though in some cases small incisions will be made outside the mouth. Plates, screws or wires may be used to hold your jaw in position after the surgery.
