Rhinoplasty

Nasal reshaping with rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, can correct a wide range of nasal defects and concerns, such as an overly large or small nose, a wide or narrow nasal bridge, enlarged or pinched nostrils, and a droopy or upturned nasal tip. Facial plastic surgeon Dr. Faisal Quereshy will discuss your cosmetic concerns and will work with you to develop a customized treatment plan to refine or enhance the shape of your nose to meet your unique personal goals.

Preparing for Rhinoplasty Surgery

Dr. Quereshy will have you start preparing for your nose surgery and provide you with aftercare instructions and necessary prescriptions well in advance so you are feeling relaxed and ready on the day of your procedure. If you smoke or use other tobacco products, you will be required to quit using them at least six weeks before undergoing nose surgery.

Two weeks before and after surgery, you will be directed to discontinue taking medications and supplements that can thin the blood, such as ibuprofen, aspirin and vitamin E.

Abstain from alcohol for one week before your rhinoplasty, and do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery. Let Dr. Quereshy know if you notice any signs of infection or illness prior to your nose surgery, as it is imperative you be in good health before having facial cosmetic surgery of any kind.

Dress comfortably the day of surgery, and do not wear makeup, jewelry, other metal items or contact lenses, but do bring glasses to help you read any necessary paperwork.

Rhinoplasty Surgery

During your rhinoplasty surgery, you will be placed under general or sedation anesthesia, and Dr. Quereshy will go to work, reshaping your nose using an open or closed rhinoplasty technique. With open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made on the columella, between your nostrils, whereas with the closed rhinoplasty technique, there are no external incisions.

The type of nasal correction you require and your unique nasal anatomy will determine whether an open or closed rhinoplasty is performed. While a closed rhinoplasty offers the advantages of a shorter operative time, reduced nasal tip swelling and no external scars, open rhinoplasty offers your rhinoplasty surgeon better visualization, less distortion of your nasal framework and more surgical precision.

In general, more complex rhinoplasty cases will require the open rhinoplasty technique. Additionally, a patient’s ethnic background also affects which rhinoplasty techniques will be used. But don’t get too caught up in the particulars of the surgical techniques used to reshape and sculpt your nose; Dr. Quereshy will use the full extent of his cosmetic surgery expertise to ensure that you get the results you want.

Rhinoplasty surgery usually takes about 1-3 hours to perform. Once the procedure is complete, soft nasal packing will be packed into your nose to prevent breakthrough bleeding, and splints may be placed along your septum to maintain your new nose shape.

Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty surgery is performed to further improve or correct the nose when you’ve already had at least one rhinoplasty. It usually takes longer to perform and is more complex than primary rhinoplasty surgery.

Because it can take up to a full year for your nose to completely heal after rhinoplasty surgery, revision rhinoplasty should not be attempted until at least this much time has elapsed since your last nose surgery procedure.

Rhinoplasty Recovery and Results

Use cold compresses to minimize swelling and bruising following your rhinoplasty surgery, and avoid hot liquids and food that requires significant chewing for one week. The day after surgery, you can gently wash your face with mild soap but should not shower to keep your nasal splint or cast dry. Gentle teeth brushing is OK as well, but use care when brushing the upper teeth.

Using a humidifier during rhinoplasty recovery will help prevent nasal dryness, and a drip pad you will change periodically will be placed under your nose to catch drainage.

It is important that you keep your head elevated and do not blow your nose for two weeks during your rhinoplasty recovery period. Also, avoid any contact with your nose, and do not participate in strenuous activity, including lifting and bending, for about six weeks.

Patients may shower three days after rhinoplasty surgery, and after one week, splints and any external sutures will be removed. At this point, warm compresses may be used instead of cold compresses to further reduce bruising. Most patients can return to work within 1-2 weeks after rhinoplasty surgery.

Protect the surgical site from sun exposure while you’re in the first 1-2 months of the rhinoplasty recovery period to prevent poor healing and scarring. Your rhinoplasty results will mature over the next several months, with final results beginning to take shape within 3-6 months. Remember it can take up to a full year for your rhinoplasty results to settle completely.
