What is SmartLipo?

SmartLipo is brand name device for the procedure known as Laser-Assisted Lipolysis. Through a small fiberoptic laser, the device actually melts or dissolves fat cells during the procedure. Smart Lipo can be performed as a standalone procedure, or in combination with traditional liposuction to maximize the amount of fat that is removed, especially from areas such as love handles, the upper back, and the male chest. SmartLipo also provides a method for tightening loose skin, which can be an advantage over traditional liposuction.

Preparing for the Smart Lipo Procedure

Dr. Quereshy will begin to ready you for Smart Lipo and provide you with aftercare instructions and necessary prescriptions well in advance so you feel relaxed and prepared for your procedure. If you smoke or use other tobacco products, you will be required to quit using them before Smart Lipo.

Two weeks before and after surgery, you will be directed to discontinue taking medications and supplements that can thin the blood, such as ibuprofen, aspirin and vitamin E.

Abstain from alcohol for one week prior to Smart Lipo, and do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery. Let Dr. Quereshy know if you notice any signs of infection or illness prior to Smart Lipo, as it is imperative you be in good health before undergoing surgery.

Dress comfortably the day of surgery, and do not wear makeup, nail polish, jewelry, other metal items or contact lenses, but do bring glasses to help you read necessary paperwork.

Smartlipo Surgery

During Smartlipo surgery, most patients require only sedation anesthesia, however general anesthesia may also be used, especially if you are combining cosmetic surgery procedures or treating multiple areas. After cleansing the treatment area, Dr. Quereshy will place inconspicuous incisions in the problem areas being treated.

Fat cells are targeted and broken up using the Smart Lipo laser device before being suctioned out through a small, thin tube called a cannula. Smart Lipo is suitable for any body area that can be treated with traditional liposuction surgery, such as the chin, back, hips, thighs, belly, buttocks and arms.

Smartlipo is different from traditional liposuction in that the laser device used to melt fat also helps your skin shrink and contract to fit your new reduced-fat body shape after surgery. This makes Smartlipo an ideal treatment for patients with less skin elasticity. Smartlipo also usually requires a shorter recovery period than traditional liposuction.

If only one or two areas are being treated with Smartlipo, the procedure typically takes 1-2 hours. However if tummy tuck surgery or other cosmetic surgery procedures are performed simultaneously, the procedure will take longer.

Smart Lipo Recovery and Results

A compression garment will be used following Smart Lipo surgery to help reduce swelling, promote skin contraction and smooth results. During Smart Lipo recovery, patients are usually encouraged to wear the garment for 3-6 weeks except when showering. Patients may shower 1-2 days after Smart Lipo, following the first follow-up visit and dressing change.

Take all prescribed antibiotics and pain medication as directed, and be sure to start moving around as much as is comfortable the day after your procedure. Dr. Quereshy will advise you when it is safe to return to normal and strenuous activity, however most patients return to work and normal activity within one week.

During your Smart Lipo recovery period, protect your incisions from sun exposure to avoid darkening your scars.

Bruising and swelling will gradually resolve over the next few weeks, and within about three months, your improved body contours will be visible. Keep in mind it may take several more weeks to months for all swelling to completely resolve, as is true with traditional body liposuction or chin liposuction.
