Wisdom Teeth

Ohio oral & maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Faisal Quereshy recommends wisdom teeth extraction to patients with the following concerns:

  • Misaligned wisdom teeth
  • Pain, infection or illness from wisdom teeth
  • Impacted wisdom teeth (trapped wholly or partially in the jawbone)

Do you need to have your wisdom teeth removed?

If you are experiencing pain or orthodontic shifting from the eruption or partial eruption of one or more of your wisdom teeth, you may need to have them surgically removed to prevent serious health problems and damage to your teeth and jaw.

Dr. Quereshy will prepare you for wisdom teeth removal and provide you with aftercare instructions and necessary prescriptions well in advance so you feel relaxed and ready for your procedure. If you smoke or use other tobacco products, you will be required to quit before your wisdom teeth are pulled.

Can I be sedated during my wisdom teeth extraction?

Local anesthesia and general or sedation anesthesia are generally used during wisdom teeth extraction. To remove your wisdom teeth, Dr. Quereshy will remove any bone covering the top of your wisdom teeth, then separate each tooth from the upper and lower jawbones and gums. To ease extraction, wisdom teeth may also be dissected prior to removal.

Dissolvable sutures may be used to close your wounds, and gauze pads will be placed in your mouth to help stop bleeding.

How long does it take to recover after wisdom teeth are pulled?

Take pain medication and antibiotics as directed during your wisdom teeth recovery period. Follow instructions for oral rinsing and eat soft foods for a few days after the procedure. Keep your head elevated, avoid strenuous activity and use cold compresses for the first 24 hours to avoid prolonged bleeding and swelling. Also, avoid hot foods as these will encourage bleeding as well.

What are "dry sockets"?

Do not smoke or use a straw or sucking motion for at least 24 hours of your wisdom teeth recovery period, as this can cause dry sockets, a painful inflammatory response that can occur if blood clots dislodge too soon. The day after surgery, you may gently brush your teeth and tongue.
