Dental Implants in Cleveland
Cleveland oral & maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Faisal Quereshy recommends dental implants to patients with the following cosmetic concerns:
- Missing teeth
- Decayed teeth
- Severely injured or traumatized teeth
Preparing for Dental Implant Surgery
Dr. Quereshy will evaluate your remaining teeth and gums before dental implant surgery to make sure you are a good candidate for the procedure. If you are in good health, have healthy gums and adequate bone structure to support dental implants, he will develop a customized dental implant treatment plan for you.
If bone structure is inadequate but you meet other criteria for dental implant surgery, Dr. Quereshy may recommend bone grafting to improve bone support and facilitate dental implants.
In the weeks prior to dental implant surgery, Dr. Quereshy will provide you with specific pre- and post-operative care instructions. You will be directed to discontinue taking medications and supplements that can thin the blood, such as ibuprofen, aspirin and vitamin E, and smoking cessation will be necessary. You should also avoid consuming alcohol a week before your dental implant surgery.

The Dental Implant Procedure
Dental implant surgery typically involves two surgical procedures, and general or sedation anesthesia is typically used for both procedures. The entire treatment process takes 6-8 months, and each surgical procedure may take an hour or more to perform. If multiple dental implants are placed, the time needed for surgery will increase.

In this procedure, a titanium screw is placed within the bone socket to hold the new implant in place.
In this procedure, structure is built into the jaw to allow for the placement of titanium rods and later implants.
The first dental implant procedure involves placing a small titanium post known as a tooth root implant in the bone socket of the tooth being replaced. This post will eventually anchor your new tooth to your gums. A temporary crown will be placed on your tooth root implant while you wait to complete the second phase of dental implant surgery.
Within 3-6 months, healing from your first dental implant procedure should be complete, and the second stage of surgery may be performed. Dr. Quereshy will take impressions of your teeth and create a crown, or artificial replacement tooth matched to your natural tooth color, based on a model of your bite. The artificial tooth will be surgically fixed to your tooth root implant with an abutment, or connector post.
Dental Implant Results and Recovery
Discomfort, swelling and bleeding will temporarily occur for 1-2 weeks following each surgery phase of your dental implant procedure. Pain medication and antibiotics should be taken as directed during the recovery period after dental implant surgery in order to minimize pain and prevent infection, and cold compresses may be used to reduce swelling.
It is important to follow post-operative oral hygiene instructions and see Dr. Quereshy as needed for follow-up appointments so he can monitor your healing progress. The final result of your dental implant procedure is a natural-looking replacement tooth and a complete, healthy smile.
