Root Canal Surgery

Untreated cavities or fractured teeth can result in infection of tooth pulp. Root canal treatment is designed to correct this infection and prevent it from spreading. The procedure is relatively painless and is essential to maintaining the health of your teeth and gums. A root canal is recommended for patients who are experiencing damage or infection of the tooth’s pulp — often caused by a fractured tooth or untreated cavity.

Preparing for Root Canal Treatment

Cleveland Endodontist Dr. Najia Usman will have you start preparing for your root canal and provide you with aftercare instructions and necessary prescriptions well in advance so you are ready to go when the day arrives. If you smoke or use other tobacco products, you will be required to quit using them before your procedure. You will also be directed to abstain from alcohol for one week before your treatment.

How the Root Canal Procedure Works

First, Dr. Usman will gently inject a local anesthetic to numb the area and prevent discomfort during the procedure. Some of the pulp will be removed from the tooth and the canal will be cleaned and filled.

If there is an infection, Dr. Usman may put medication inside the tooth. The top of the tooth will then be covered by a temporary filling until it is fitted with a permanent crown which will prevent the tooth from breaking in the future.

Recovery

The tooth may feel sensitive for the first few days after the procedure. The pain can usually be controlled with over-the-counter pain medication. Take antibiotics and pain medication as directed by the doctor. Until a permanent filling or crown is placed, minimize chewing on the tooth to avoid breakage.

Frequently Asked Questions About Root Canal

Can I have my treatment under anesthesia?

You can absolutely go under anesthesia for a root canal. At Visage Facial Surgery, we use a technique called “Endo-Asleep” to keep our patients comfortable and minimize pain.

Why should I choose an Endodontist in Cleveland and Medina Area?

Endodontists are dentists who have undergone two or more years of additional advanced education to treat the soft inner tissue of the teeth, called the pulp. Although all dentists are trained in diagnosis and endodontic therapy, some teeth can be especially difficult to diagnose and treat.

What is the price of a root canal in the Cleveland area?

The cost varies slightly depending on the tooth and the severity of the problem. Most dental insurance plans do cover the cost of root canal surgery, but if you are without dental insurance, call us at for more information. Our prices are competitive for the Cleveland area.

Does insurance cover root canal surgery?

Your dental insurance should cover most of the procedure. Check with your provider for specifics about your coverage or call us – we can usually help determine the cost for you.
