Chemical Peel Preparation

Chemical peel preparations will depend largely on the depth of your peel. Mild peels, such peels like the Vitalize Peel, which contain glycolic acid (alpha hydroxy acid) and/or salicylic acid (beta hydroxy acid), and moderate peels, which contain trichloroacetic acid (TCA), will require only that patients avoid excessive sun exposure, facial waxing or shaving and use of exfoliating agents and acne treatments products prior to the procedure.

Deeper chemical peels, such as phenol peels, may require more preparation, and Dr. Quereshy will provide you with pre-procedure and post-procedure care instructions before your treatment.

How a Chemical Skin Peel Works

Facial cleansing is the first step for any chemical peel treatment. If you’re having a deeper chemical peel, you may be given a mild sedative and treated with numbing cream to relieve discomfort, however mild and moderate chemical peels typically do not require anesthesia.

The chemical peeling agent you have selected will be mixed to the specific concentration needed to help achieve your cosmetic goals and then applied in thin layers as needed. A neutralizing agent will be applied once your treatment is complete, and most patients can return to work and normal activities right away after this brief 20-30 minute procedure.

As an alternative to chemical peels, some patients may opt for laser skin resurfacing or IPL treatment to correct skin pigmentation and texture problems.

Chemical Peel Results and Recovery

Much like chemical peel preparation, chemical peel results and recovery are largely dependent on the depth and concentration of the chemical peel treatment you choose. Deeper peels will have a lengthier recovery period, whereas mild peels will have little to no downtime. The neck and chest also heal more slowly than the face, so keep this in mind as you monitor your recovery.

After any chemical peel, you will need to protect your skin from the sun while you heal to avoid permanent pigmentation changes and skin damage. Mild to severe redness and flaking, or even crusting in the case of deep peels, may occur after treatment and may be managed by using moisturizers. Do not pick or scratch at your skin as it heals, as this may also cause permanent pigmentation changes.

Within a few days to a few weeks after your chemical peel, you will see your the final results. Your skin will have a healthy, refreshed glow, and your skin tone and texture will improve. Sometimes, a series of treatments can help you maximize and maintain your results.
