Neck Lift

Loose, sagging skin in the neck area can make you look aged even if you’ve treated wrinkles and sagging skin on your face. A neck lift will help you get rid of the dreaded turkey neck (excess, hanging skin on the neck), and improve the definition of your lower face. Neck liposuction can also be utilized in combination with neck lift surgery to reduce fat below the chin and further refine your jaw and neck line.

Dr. Faisal A. Quereshy recommends neck lift surgery to patients with the following cosmetic concerns:

  • Jowls
  • Neck folds and creases
  • Undefined jawline contours
  • Loose, excess neck skin

If you exhibit any of these conditions, consider a consultation with Dr. Quereshy, so you can determine if neck lift surgery will benefit you.

Neck Lift Preparation

Dr. Quereshy will begin to ready for your neck lift and provide you with aftercare instructions and necessary prescriptions well in advance so you feel prepared and relaxed when the big day arrives. If you smoke or use other tobacco products, you will be required to quit using them at least six weeks before your neck lift procedure.

Two weeks before and after surgery, you will be directed to discontinue taking medications and supplements that can thin the blood, such as ibuprofen, aspirin and vitamin E.

Abstain from alcohol for one week before your neck lift, and do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before. Let Dr. Quereshy know if you notice any signs of infection or illness prior to your neck lift, as it is imperative you be in good health before undergoing surgery.

Dress comfortably the day of surgery, and do not wear makeup, jewelry, other metal items or contact lenses, but do bring glasses to help you read necessary paperwork.

Neck Lift Surgery

During your neck lift procedure, you will be under general or sedation anesthesia. Dr. Quereshy will place inconspicuous incisions behind your ears, along your hairline and potentially beneath your chin. Sagging neck skin and muscle are removed, the tissues are lifted and tightened and stitches are used to close your incisions.

Neck lift surgery takes 1-2 hours but may take longer when performed along with other cosmetic procedures. Usually some neck and chin liposuction is included to further improve lower face contours and reduce stubborn fat deposits that cause a double chin. A neck lift is also often performed in combination with facelift surgery to provide complete rejuvenation of the face and neck.

Neck Lift Recovery and Results

Your head will be loosely wrapped with bandages immediately following neck lift surgery, and surgical drains may be used to minimize fluid collection and swelling. Drains and dressings will be removed within 1-2 days of your neck lift at the first post-operative appointment with Dr. Quereshy, and you will be allowed to shower 24 hours after surgery.

Keep sutures clean and apply ointment to them until they are removed or dissolved, and wear your surgical garment as directed. Take all prescribed antibiotics and pain medication as directed as well. No strenuous activity, including lifting or bending, and keep your head elevated for at least one week after your neck lift.

Most patients resume wearing makeup within one week and return to work within 1-2 weeks. Dr. Quereshy will monitor your healing progress and advise you when it is safe to return to normal activity and strenuous activity. During your neck lift recovery period, protect your incisions from sun exposure to avoid darkening your scars.

Bruising and swelling will gradually resolve over the next few weeks, and within 3-6 months, your firmer, slimmer neck contours will begin to take shape.
