What is Fractional Laser Resurfacing?

Fractional resurfacing is a new method of laser skin rejuvenation, which unlike earlier laser resurfacing treatments only treats a fraction of the skin at a time, leaving the surrounding areas untouched. This method of treatment allows for a faster downtime than earlier laser technologies.

The Fractional Laser Resurfacing Procedure

Before your fractional laser treatment, the treatment area, which may include all or part of your face, neck, chest or hands will be cleansed and prepared for treatment. No anesthesia is typically needed during the procedure.

Dr. Quereshy will adjust laser settings to provide you with the level of correction needed to achieve your cosmetic goals, and spend roughly 30 minutes to complete a full face treatment.

Skin resurfacing with fractional laser treatment stimulates the body’s natural collagen production process by heating microscopic sections of your skin’s deeper layers. This promotes skin health and rejuvenation without damaging large areas of your skin’s surface or causing significant downtime.

Fractional laser resurfacing is typically performed in a series of 3-5 treatments spaced 2-4 weeks apart to achieve optimal results.

Laser Resurfacing Recovery and Results

Fractional laser resurfacing is much milder than CO2 laser resurfacing, and thus there is little to no downtime associated with the procedure.

Depending on the aggressiveness of your treatment, the laser resurfacing recovery period is about 1-3 days, during which time skin will be lightly swollen and pink, as if it is mildly sunburned. Most patients do not need to miss work during this time.

Cold compresses and antihistamines may be used to relieve temporary swelling. Moisturizing cream and sun block should also be used during the laser resurfacing recovery period to help your skin heal and protect your results. After 4-5 days, skin may begin to peel, however this is not the case in all patients.

Initial results and skin rejuvenation will be seen within weeks of your procedure and will continue to improve with time. Final laser skin resurfacing results including improvements in skin tone and texture and subtle skin tightening are seen 3-6 months after your treatments are complete, due to the long-term collagen remodeling effect of fractional laser treatment.

How should I prepare for my laser skin resurfacing treatment?

Dr. Quereshy will have you start preparing for fractional laser skin resurfacing treatment and provide you with aftercare instructions and necessary prescriptions well in advance so you are relaxed and ready for your procedure when the day arrives.

If you smoke or use other tobacco products, you may be required to quit using them before your procedure. Dr. Quereshy may also assign you a customized skin care regimen to use before laser resurfacing to better prepare your skin for treatment.

Let Dr. Quereshy know if you are prone to cold sores or notice signs of an infection or illness prior to treatment.
