The Perils of a Double Chin

What Causes a Double Chin?

There are three main factors that lead to submental fullness, the medical term for a double chin: genetics, age, and weight gain.

Genetics: Unfortunately, you may be genetically predisposed to having a double chin. Just as genetics play a large part in the chin’s structural formation, the tendency to accumulate and hold submental fat is also largely determined by your gene pool.

Age: Most would agree that age does little for our bodies. The chin is no exception. With age, the chin softens, often appearing saggy and droopy. Common age related factors are:

• Decrease in muscle tone
• Skin becomes thin and wan
• Collagen breaks down and natural elasticity is lost

Weight Gain: We all have so called ‘trouble spots’. For many, stubborn fat amasses under the chin and in the neck area, creating a double chin. Immune to diet and exercise, stubborn fat is hard to target—especially as there is no real workout for the neck.
